おもに人にモノをあげるという意味で理解される give という動詞ですが、あげるモノはモノとは限りません。また前置詞をともなっていろいろな意味を持つようになります。

1. give up (事) をあきらめる
After trying hard, Ken gave up.
一生懸命やった後、ケンはあきらめた。
He gave up smoking last year.
彼は昨年たばこをやめた。
He is thinking of giving up teaching English.
彼は英語を教えるのをやめようかと考えている。
2. give 人 a hand 手伝う, 助ける
Can you give me a hand?
手伝ってくれない？
Can you give me a hand with my homework.
宿題を手伝ってくれない？
I’ll give you a hand to carry the table.
そのテーブルを運ぶのを手伝うよ。
3. give away モノ ～を人にあげる、手放す
I gave away my books to my friend.
私は本を友達にあげた。
My brother gave away his bike to his friend.
私の兄は自分の自転車を友人にあげた。
Kenji gave away his dog to her, because he couldnt feed it anymore.
もうそれ以上飼うことができなくなったので、健司は自分の犬を彼女にあげた。
Hiroshi gave away all his magazines.
ヒロシは彼の雑誌をすべて手放した。
4. give 催し ～を開催する
The milionaire will give a huge party this weekend.
億万長者は今週末、大規模なパーティーを開催する。
She will give a gorgeous concert in Japan next year.
彼女は来年日本ですごいコンサートを開くよ。
They are always giving driking parties.
彼らはいつも飲み会をしている。
The ceremony is going to be given in honor of the president tomorrow.
社長の功績をたたえて式典が明日開催されます。
5. give 声を出す動作 ～を述べる、言う
My professor will give a lecture.
教授が講義をする。
Would you mind if I give you some advice?
いくつか助言していい？
The politician is not good at giving a speech in public.
その政治家は人前でスピーチするのが苦手だ。
He gave a talk of thirty minutes.
彼は30分話した。
6. give over モノ／人 ～引き渡す、預ける、任せる
He gave over his bussiness to his son.
彼は事業を息子に任せた。
The guard gave a shoplifter over to the policeman.
警備員は万引き犯を警官に引き渡した。
They gave most of their work over to their assistants.
彼らは仕事のほとんどをアシスタントに任せた。
7. give off 気体 ～を放つ、発する
The liquid gave off a strong smell.
その液体は強いにおいを放っていた。
Human beings inhale oxygen and give off carbon dioxide.
人間は酸素を吸って二酸化炭素を出す。
Roses usually give off a pleasant perfume.
バラはたいていいい香りがする。
8. give out モノ ～を配る
Can you give it out to everybody?
それをみんなに配ってくれる？
The professor gave the handouts out by himself.
教授は自分で資料を配った。
She gave out some candies in the office.
彼女は仕事場でキャンディーを配った。
9. give 人 the cold shoulder ～を避ける、無視する
He gave me the cold shoulder.
彼は私を無視した。
Why is she giving me the cold shoulder?
どうして彼女は僕を避けるの？
10. give in ( to 人／事） （～に）説得されて屈する
I will never give in to his demand.
彼の要求には絶対屈しない。
I don't think she will give in to your requests.
彼女は君の頼みに応じないと思うな。
