基本動詞 keep の用法いろいろ

1. keep+ 人／モノ＋形容詞or名詞 　～を・・に保つ、～を～にしておく

Could you keep the door open?

ドアを開けておいてもらえますか？

I kept him waiting.

私は彼を待たせた。

I'll keep it a secret between you and me.

君と僕との間の秘密にしておくよ。

Please keep the desk organaized.

机を整理しておいてください。

2. keep in touch (with 人）　～と連絡を取り合う

Let's keep in touch.

連絡を取り合おう。

He hopes to keep in touch with her.

彼は彼女と連絡を取り合えることを願った。

My ex-husband and I still keep in touch.

元旦那と私は今も連絡を取り合っている。

3. keep in mind   ～を念頭に置く

Shipment is expensive and you have to keep it in mind.

運送費は高い。それを念頭に置いといて。

Keep that in mind when you come to say something.

なにか言いに来るときはそれを念頭に置いといて。

You always shoud keep it in mind that readers are not interested in politics.

読者は政治に関心がないことを常に頭の中に入れておくべきだ。

I will keep what she said in mind.

彼女が言ったことを頭の中に入れておくよ。

4. keep one's word   　約束を守る

 Do you think he can keep his word?

彼は約束を守れると思う？

He couldn't keep his word.

彼は約束を守れなかった。

5. keep 記録　　記録をつける

Are you keeping a diary?

日記をつけてる？

Why should I keep records?

どうして記録をつけるべきなの？

Keeping books correctly is the most important job in the accounting department.

帳簿を正しくつけるのが経理部の最も大事な仕事だ。

6. keep up (with 人／モノ）　　～についていく

I don't know if I can keep this up any longer.

これ以上ついていけるかわからない。

I had to walk fast to keep up with him.

彼についていくために早く歩かなければならなかった。

He is running so fast that I can't keep up with him.

彼は走るのがとても速いのでついていけないよ。

He reads New York Times to keep up with what is going on in the world.

彼は世界で起こっていることについていくためにニューヨークタイムズを読んでいる。

7. keep 人 form ～ing    人に～させないようにする

The noise kept him from sleeping well.

騒音のせいで彼はじゅうぶんに寝ることができなかった。

How can you keep from crying ?

どうして泣かずにいられるの？

I couldn't keep myself from laughing.

笑わずにはいられなかった。

＝I couldn't help laughing   or  I had no choice but to laugh.

Even my mother can't keep me from going out.

母さんでも僕が外出するのをやめさせることはできないよ。

8. keep out (of 場所）　～の外にいる

Keep out!

入らないで！

I was told to keep out of his office.

彼のオフィスに入らないように言われた。

Keep out of the way, please.

道をあけておいてください。

keep the dog out of the house.

犬が家に入らないようにして。

9. keep at 仕事／勉強　　～を根気よくやる

If you will keep at it, you will succeed.

根気よくやれば成功するよ。

The tip of dieting is to keep at it.

ダイエットのコツは根気よく取り組むことだ。

The project was hard but I kept at it.

計画は困難だったが、根気よくやった。

10. keep away from        ～を避ける、～遠ざかる

I have been keeping away from alchool since last year.

昨年から飲酒はしていません。

You should keep away from somoking.

禁煙しなさい。

He always keeps away from others.

彼はいつも他人を避けている。

Everybody keeps away from that creepy house.

誰もがあの気味悪い家を避けている。

基本動詞 give の用法いろいろ

おもに人にモノをあげるという意味で理解される give という動詞ですが、あげるモノはモノとは限りません。また前置詞をともなっていろいろな意味を持つようになります。

1. give up (事)    をあきらめる

After trying hard, Ken gave up.

一生懸命やった後、ケンはあきらめた。

He gave up smoking last year.

彼は昨年たばこをやめた。

He is thinking of giving up teaching English.

彼は英語を教えるのをやめようかと考えている。

2. give 人 a hand      手伝う,　助ける

Can you give me a hand?

手伝ってくれない？

Can you give me a hand with my homework.

宿題を手伝ってくれない？

I’ll give you a hand to carry the table.

そのテーブルを運ぶのを手伝うよ。

3. give away モノ　～を人にあげる、手放す

I gave away my books to my friend.

私は本を友達にあげた。

My brother gave away his bike to his friend.

私の兄は自分の自転車を友人にあげた。

Kenji gave away his dog to her, because he couldnt feed it anymore.

もうそれ以上飼うことができなくなったので、健司は自分の犬を彼女にあげた。

Hiroshi gave away all his magazines.

ヒロシは彼の雑誌をすべて手放した。

4. give 催し　　～を開催する

The milionaire will give a huge party this weekend.

億万長者は今週末、大規模なパーティーを開催する。

She will give a gorgeous concert in Japan next year.

彼女は来年日本ですごいコンサートを開くよ。

They are always giving driking parties.

彼らはいつも飲み会をしている。

The ceremony is going to be given in honor of the president tomorrow.

社長の功績をたたえて式典が明日開催されます。

5. give 声を出す動作　　～を述べる、言う

My professor will give a lecture.

教授が講義をする。

Would you mind if I give you some advice?

いくつか助言していい？

 The politician is not good at giving a speech in public.

その政治家は人前でスピーチするのが苦手だ。

He gave a talk of thirty minutes.

彼は30分話した。

6. give over モノ／人   ～引き渡す、預ける、任せる

He gave over his bussiness to his son.

彼は事業を息子に任せた。

The guard gave a shoplifter over to the policeman.

警備員は万引き犯を警官に引き渡した。

They gave most of their work over to their assistants.

彼らは仕事のほとんどをアシスタントに任せた。

7. give off 気体　　～を放つ、発する

The liquid gave off a strong smell.

その液体は強いにおいを放っていた。

Human beings inhale oxygen and give off carbon dioxide.

人間は酸素を吸って二酸化炭素を出す。

Roses usually give off a pleasant perfume.

バラはたいていいい香りがする。

8. give out モノ　　～を配る

Can you give it out to everybody?

それをみんなに配ってくれる？

The professor gave the handouts out by himself.

教授は自分で資料を配った。

She gave out some candies in the office.

彼女は仕事場でキャンディーを配った。

9. give 人 the cold shoulder   ～を避ける、無視する

He gave me the cold shoulder.

彼は私を無視した。

Why is she giving me the cold shoulder?

どうして彼女は僕を避けるの？

10. give in ( to 人／事）　（～に）説得されて屈する

I will never give in to his demand.

彼の要求には絶対屈しない。

I don't think she will give in to your requests.

彼女は君の頼みに応じないと思うな。

「たまたま、偶然に」 の表現

1. no reason in particular   たまたま(特別な理由がないと言いたいとき)

I haven't visited my uncle since last year. There is no particular reason.

去年からおじさんのところへいってないな。たまたまだよ。（特に理由はないよ） 

よりカジュアルに

No reason in particular.

2. happen to     たまたま～する　

I happened to see my ex-husband at the shopping mall yesterday.

ショッピングモールで元旦那にでくわした。

I happened to go to the hotel with her house after the drinking party.

飲み会の後, 彼女と一緒にホテルに行くことになった。

I happened to know that my wife had a affair.

たまたま私の妻が不倫していることを知ってしまた。

3. accidentaly    たまたま～する

The chef accidentally cut his finger slicing carrots.

料理人はニンジンをスライスしているときにたまたま指を切った。

I accidentally saw my boss at the internet cafe.

たまたま上司にインターネットカフェで出くわした。

4. by chance    たまたま～する

I walked into the cute cafe by chance.

たまたまそのかわいいカフェに入った。

I saw the movie by chance.

たまたまその映画を見ました。

5．fluke  ( たまたま,まぐれで）

I won the first prize. It was a total fluke.

一等賞とったよ。ただのまぐれだけどね。

基本動詞 go の用法いろいろ

go は～へ行くという意味で良く使われますが、前置詞などを変えることにより様々な意味を持ちます。

1. go to 場所　～へ行く

Let's go to the arcade.

ゲームセンターへ行こう！

I want to go to Iceland.

アイスランドへ行きたい。

I need to go to the hospital and visit my uncle.

病院に行っておじさんのお見舞いをしなくては。

Are you planning to go to Canada?

カナダに行くつもりなの？

2. go up 　上へ行く

Going up?

（エレベーターなどで）上ですか？

She went up.

彼女は上へ行った。

3. go ahead  　どうぞ～してください

Go ahead !

どうぞ！

Please go ahead.

どうぞお先に。

4. go out   外出する

I really want to go out tonight.

今夜は外出したくてしょうがないよ。

Where do you wanna go out?

どこへ出かけたい？

I' don't feel going out today.

今日は出かけたい気分じゃない。

I'm going out for lunch.

昼ごはんにでかけるよ。

I hardly go out.

めったに外出しない。

5. go for it      やってみる

You should go for it.

やってみるべきだよ。

Just go for it.

やってみなよ。

6. go 動詞の現在進行形　 ～しに行く

I'm going shopping with my friends this afternoon.

午後は友達とショッピングに行く予定です。

I love to go dancing.

踊りに行くのが大好き。

I used to go jogging every day when I was young.

若い時は毎日ジョギングにいったものだ。

He frequently goes hiking.

彼は頻繁にハイキングに行く。

7. go on 名詞　　～を続ける

The wedding party went on until the next day.

結婚パーティーは次の日まで続いた。

Go on！

続けて！

If you go on such stupid things, you will lose your friends.

こんな愚かなことを続けていたら、友達を失うよ。

I can't go on protecting you.

君をかばい続けられないよ。

8. 名詞 to go     残りは～

We still have two days to go beore holidays.

休日まであと二日ある。

I finished with two of them and has three to go.

彼女はその課題のうち二つを終えて三つが残っている。

There are still two months to go.

二か月残っている。

9. go       なくなる

My wallet was gone.

財布がなくなった。

The typhoon is gone.

台風は行ってしまったよ。

Your father is gone forever.

あなたのお父さんは二度と帰ってこないよ。

Fortunately, the pain has gone.

さいわい痛みは消えた。

10. go one's way   　～の思い通りに行く

I was hoping things went my way.

事が思い通りいくよう願っていた。

Everything is going my way.

全ては私の思い通りにいっている。

She gets mad easily if things don't go her way.

彼女は物事が思い通りにいかないとすぐ怒る。
