オンライン英会話を始めて通算2700回目くらいのレッスン。

前半7~8分ほどはいつものダラダラスモールトーク。接近中の台風と衣替えについて。そのあと古着屋さんについて話す。

その後, 記事を読んでディスカッションおよびフリートーク。

The article is about the worlds first hydrogen train in Germany.   Hydrogen trains emit only steam and oxygen. That's why they are very eco-friendly. Many people find them as one of the best way to reduce the effect of global warning.

 

記事はドイツの世界初の水素電車に関するものです。水素電車は蒸気と酸素しか放出しません。したがって非常に環境に優しいものです。多くの人が地球温暖化の影響を減少させる最良の方法と考えています。

 

However, I'm concerned about their safety. Because hydorogen is extremely explosive gas.

 

しかし、私はその安全性に懸念を持っています。なぜなら水素は非常に爆発しやすいガスだからです。

 

Once it explodes in a tunnnel, for examples, no one can rescue passengers and crews. And also initial cost is quite expensive when they are built.  I guess It will take long time until they become more common in Europe. 

 

たとえばトンネル内で爆発しようものなら、誰も乗員や乗客を救出することはできないでしょう。また製造時の初期コストはたいへん高いです。私は水素電車がヨーロッパで一般的になるのにはまだまだ時間がかかると思います。

 

簡単な記事で特に話すのに困る、戸惑う箇所は無し。

1.場所を尋ねる時の表現

 

How do I get to Tokyo Station?
東京駅まではどのように行きますか?

 

How can I get to Osaka Station?
大阪駅まではどうやったらたどり着けるでしょうか?

 

Could you tell me where Kyoto Station is?
京都駅の場所を教えていただいてもよろしいですか?

 

Where is the closest station?
ここから一番近い駅はどこですか?

 

I’m looking for Okayama Station.
岡山駅を探しています。

 

 

2. 道を教える時の表現

 

At first, Go down this street.
まずはこの道をそのまま行ってください。


And you'll see Mitsukosi department store on your left hand and turn right there.
すると左手に三越が見えてきますからそこで右に曲がってください。

 

And go past a 7-eleven convienience store, finally you'll get to the postal office.

そしてセブンイレブンを通り過ぎて下さい。最後に郵便局にたどり着くでしょう。

 

The quickest way is to go straight this alley.

この路地をまっすぐ進んでください。

 

Go along Meiji street for 10mins.
明治通りに沿って10分歩いてください。

 

Go along this street for 5 minutes.

この通りを道なりに5分ほどいってください。

 

Go under the bridge and you'll find the station.
橋の下をくぐってください。そうすれば駅が見えてきます。

 

Go over the railway crossing.

踏切を越えて下さい。

 

Don’t cross the road, it’s on this side.
こちら側の通りにあるので反対側に渡らないでね。

 

 

 

3.場所を説明する表現

 

The place you want to go is next to a bookstore.

あなたの行きたい場所は本屋の横にあります。

 

The postal office is opposite a department store.
郵便局はデパートの向かいにあります。

 

A flowershop is between the bookstore and the supermarket.

花屋が本屋とスーパーマーケットの間にあります。

 

My apartment is near the station

私のアパートは駅の近くです。

 

It's around the corner.

それはだいたい角にあるよ。

 

Mitsukoshi is on Ginza street.

三越は銀座通りにあります。

「通勤」に関する表現

通勤というと commute という単語を思い浮かべがちですが、それ以外にもいろいろな表現が可能です。

 

 

I go to work by bus and train.

バスと電車で通勤している。

 

My boss come to work from a great distance.

私の上司はずいぶんと遠くから通勤している。

 

My office is within easy commuting distance.

私のオフィスは楽に通勤できる距離にある。

 

Utsunomiya is within commuting distance of Tokyo.

宇都宮は東京の通勤圏内だ。

 

I'm exhausted by commuter's hell.

通勤地獄で疲労困憊だ。

 

She commutes from Kamakura to Yokohama.

彼女は鎌倉から横浜まで通勤している。

 

The train was jammed with many commuters.

列車は通勤客で満員だった。

通勤時間はどのぐらい?

※commute はそのまま通勤、通学、通勤時間を意味する名詞として使えます。

 

I listen to English podcasts on may way to work.

外国人はどのように日本語を習得する?

 

日本在住のカナダ人人気Youtuberシャーラさんの動画です。

 彼女がどのように日本語を学んだか英語で解説しています。(日本語字幕あり)

 

ひらかな、カタカナなど基本は学校で習ったそうですが、あとは音楽やテレビ番組、ゲーム、SNSなどから日本語を覚えていったそうです。

 

外国人の語学習得法はこういったパターンが多いですよね。

 

こういった語学の習得法に関する話は英語学習者ならだれでも真剣に見ると思うので、勉強法を英語で聞くというのはいいトレーニングになると思います。

 

英語をマスターするには、すこしづつ身の回りで触れるものを英語のモノに置き換えていくことが重要ですね。

 

 

基本動詞 turn の用法いろいろ

1. turn (方向)

 

Turn right and you will find the station.

右に曲がったら駅が見えるよ。

 

Turn left.

左に曲がって。

 

Turn left at the third corner.

3番目の角を左に曲がって。

 

Go straight until you get to the police station and turn reight.

交番までまっすぐ進んでそこで右に曲がってください。

 

 

2. turn up 電化製品  ~を強める、~の音量を上げる

 

Don't turn up the TV.

テレビの音量を上げないで。

 

Turn up the AC, please.

エアコンを強めて下さい。

 

Turn up the light for me,please.

灯りを明るくしてください。

 

Turn up the music.

音楽の音量をあげて。

 

 

3. turn 状態を表す形容詞または turn into 名詞  ~になる

 

The leaves are turning red due to the cold wave.

寒波の影響で木の葉が赤くなってきた。

 

I will turn 20 in October.

十月で二十歳になります。

 

Finally, Lisa turned into a model.

ついにリサはモデルになった。

 

The prince turned into a beast.

王子は野獣になった。

 

 

4. turn on 電化製品  ~をつける

 

Can you turn on the TV?

テレビをつけてくれる?

 

The old man turn on the gas and lit the stove.

年老いた男はガスの栓をひねりコンロに火をつけた。

 

James turned on his PC.

ジョンはコンピューターの電源を入れた。

 

Why can't I turn the light on?

なぜ明かりをつけちゃダメなの?

 

Try to turn on the tap. It's too tight to open.

蛇口をひねってみて。固すぎて開かないよ。

 

 

5.turn back       引きかえす

 

We will turn back if it is stormy condition.

嵐の場合には引き返します。

 

Let’s turn back immediately.

すぐに引き返そう。

 

You can always turn back and do the right thing.

いつも引き返して正しいことをすることができるよ。

 

We have gone too far to turn back.

引きかえすには遠くに来すぎた。

 

 

6. turn out 名詞/形容詞  結果的に~となる

 

Everything is going to turn out fine.

すべて大丈夫そうだ。

 

I hope things turn out all right.

物事がうまくいくことを願っています。

 

I don't know why it turned out like this.

なぜこんなふうになってしまったかわからない。

 

 

7. turn to ページ  ページを開く

 

Turn to page 10.

10ページを開きなさい。

 

Turn to the last page.

最後のページを開きなさい。

 

 

8. turn down 依頼/提案など  ~を断る

 

She turned down his offer.

彼女は彼の申し出を断った。

 

Tom proposed me but  I turned down.

トムは私にプロポーズしたが私は断った。

 

Why did you turn down such a great proposal ?

どうしてそんなすごい提案を断ったの?

 

 

9. turn against 人/モノ/状態  ~を敵にまわす、~に反する

 

All supporters turned against them.

全ての支持者が彼らの敵にまわった。

 

My stepmother is turning against me.

継母は私に敵対している。

 

The rival factions are turning against one onother.

対抗する派閥が敵対し合った。

 

Many people had turned against the war.

多くの人々が戦争に反対した。

 

 

10.  at every turn   絶えず、いつも

 

I'm frustrated at every turn by petty rules.

取るに足りない規則にはいつもいらいらさせられる。

 

Ken has been seeing his ex girlfriend at every turn lately.

このところジョンは元カノに会ってばかりいる。

 

My boss opposes me at every turns.
